Yellow Pear Tomatoes

I guess I wasn't sure what to expect from these, having compulsively picked up so many varieties of tomato at the plant nursery. As it turned out, they are a sort of cherry tomato. Sweet, yes, but the can't even begin to compare to my Sweet Millions. The plant is a heavy producer, we had way more of these little guys than we could eat. The were very pretty in salads and salsa, but you could easily get that color from a more flavorful tomato. I won't plant this variety again, but I'm glad I tried something new.

I am so impressed by everything you grow! I want to start a garden in the spring (though Hubby is convinced I won't stick to it). Do you have any advice? We just purchased our first house last year so I would be starting a garden from the ground up.

GiggleBox-
Thanks! I'm not much of an expert, to be sure, but I do love to plant stuff. I'm not always so good with the follow through. My enthusiasm seems to wane as the summer gets hotter.

My couple of pieces of advice are:

1. Don't overdo it. Start small. Buy plants, not seeds, at least your first year.

2. Do plant your garden where you will see it every day. I have most of my plants right out front and I have to walk past them on my way in and out the door every day.

3. Do keep track of what varieties you plant. That way you know what you do and don't like for following years.

4. If you can afford it, build a raised bed. If you can't, make sure your soil is fairly nice. It is early yet. You could plot out your spot now, then dump your compost on it all winter. By spring it will be nice and rich to mix into your native soil.

5. Use your local library. Look at all the pretty pictures in the gardening books. One I couldn't live without: Great Garden Companions, by Sally Jean Cunningham. http://www.amazon.com/Great-Garden-Companions-Companion-Planting-Chemical-Free/dp/0875968473/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1289325802&sr=8-2

6. This lazy girl loved her soaker hose this summer, but should have been more vigilant about the water usage as she now has a very expensive water/sewer bill waiting to be paid.

Good luck!
